- On January 16, 1918, the Cacereño Sports Club was founded with the first Organizing Committee, in which Lorenzo Alcaraz holds the position of president. The first board of directors was officially constituted on April 18, 1919 with the aim of becoming the main club in the province of Cáceres. The first squad was made up of players from Sport Cacereño and Athletic Cacereño, teams prior to CD Cacereño but that would not last for many more years. The first serious game that Cacereño would play was in 1919. In that game they played against Sport Club Pacense in Badajoz, the Cacereños taking the victory by 2-3. Two years later, the first informal regional soccer championship would be played. CD Cacereño, Sport Club Badajoz, Villafranca de los Barros and Emerita CF Militar de Mérida played in this tournament. The first two clubs would reach the final, Cacereño winning the final with a result of 2-3. It would not be until the 43/44 season that Cacereño played their first league at the national level. The delegation for Extremadura of the South Soccer Federation was created and the Cáceres team entered the competition thanks to the good results obtained in the previous year. The first official match in the national category was played against the Imperio de Madrid CF in Cabezarrubia with a 3-2 victory for the people of Cáceres. And the first goal scored was the work of Santitos. The season concluded with the championship won by Cacereño with a point advantage over Badajoz. This allowed the team to play its first league promotion to the Second Division, although promotion could not be achieved, remaining in third position behind Santander and Ferrol, and being above Logroñés. After winning the Third Division championship in the 51/52 season, the club achieved promotion to Second, its highest category to date, and becoming the first Extremadura team to do so. Despite the conditioning work carried out by the Ciudad Deportiva, this season the team did not obtain good results, so they were relegated at the end of the same season. On March 19, 1969, a match was held against Atlético de Madrid to commemorate the 50 years of the club's existence. In October 1975, it was renamed Club Polideportivo Cacereño when it took over the agonizing basketball club in the city. Years later, at the end of August 1979, the club would end its basketball section, although it would continue with the same name until today.
In the nineties, the club managed to stay for several seasons in Second Division B. It would come to be in first position in group I in the 97/98 season, but it finished last in the promotion phase to Second Division behind Mallorca B ( club promoted), Granada and Bilbao Athletic. On January 21, 2003, the club became Sociedad Anónima Deportiva (SAD), with Mr. Félix Campo as president.
In the following season the team would return to group 14 of the Third Division, in which it would remain for five years. Years later, in 07/08, CP Cacereño managed to return to Second Division B after finishing second in the group and winning the three promotion playoff heats.
At the end of the 2011/2012 season, he was in seventh position, thus being able to play the Copa del Rey in the following campaign. This led the club to play the round of 32 against Málaga CF (who would reach the quarterfinals in the Champions League that season), losing the first leg at home 3-4 and winning the second leg at the Rosaleda by 0-1 .
